Foways Office

The AI in the office suite you already pay for.

Foways Office is an AI-native office suite — documents, spreadsheets, slides, PDF and Markdown — that runs on an Indian-government-approved AI stack. Departments already pay full subscription for an office suite whose AI is switched off in India because the data centres sit abroad. This one turns it on.

AI-native office suite2026Available for government pilots

// the_overview

Indian government departments pay the full price of a modern office subscription and get a fraction of the product. The AI features — the ones the price went up for — are unavailable, because the inference runs in data centres outside India and citizen data cannot go there. The seat is bought, the invoice is paid, and the most valuable half of the suite is dark.

Foways Office is the answer to exactly that. It is a complete desktop office suite for Windows, Linux and macOS, and every AI capability in it runs on an approved Indian stack — Indian-origin models and open weights hosted on Indian GPU infrastructure — so the residency question that switched the AI off does not arise.

It is AI-native rather than AI-adjacent. There is no side panel that suggests text you paste in yourself. You describe what you want and the document is built or changed: a full report drafted to a departmental template, a budget sheet rebuilt with new formulas, pivot tables and charts, a deck assembled from a note, a scanned circular turned into a searchable, tagged PDF. Every edit lands as a block-level change with a snapshot and a diff, so an officer approves the change rather than inheriting it.

And it adds the tool no office subscription includes: real PDF creation and editing. Not annotations layered over a page — the actual text retyped in place with the original fonts preserved, images replaced inside the content stream, forms filled, pages reordered, signatures applied. For a government office, where the PDF is the record, that is the difference between a suite and a workaround.

// the_problem

You already pay the AI price. The AI is switched off.

A department renews the mainstream office subscription every year at the full, AI-era seat price. The invoice is paid, the licence is live, and the assistant on the toolbar does nothing. The features the price rose for are greyed out, region-locked, or blocked by the department's own policy. The seat is bought; half the product is dark.

The reason is not licensing. It is geography. Inference for those features runs in data centres outside India, and a file that touches citizen records cannot leave Indian territory — not under the DPDP regime, not under CERT-In logging rules, not under a Tier A department's own security policy. So the compliant answer is to keep the AI off.

Meanwhile the real work routes around the product: a separate PDF editor licence, a scanned circular no one can search, a layout that only survives if you export it first, a translation vendor for the official-language edition, an analyst for a budget model that is four pivot tables. Foways Office ends every one of them.

// how_it_works

Four moves that make it AI-native

Not a chat box beside a toolbar. The model reaches into the document model itself — blocks, cells, shapes, page content streams — so describing a change is the same as making it.

// 01

Describe it, get it built

Say what the document should be and it appears — a memo from a note, a deck from a report, a model from a column of figures. Edits land block by block, with a snapshot and a diff before anything is committed.

// 02

Spreadsheets that answer back

Full analysis, not a formula bar: pivot tables, slicers, conditional formatting, charts and formula tracing — built on request and explained on request. Ask why a cell reads what it reads and the chain of precedents comes back in plain language.

// 03

Real PDF editing, not annotation

Retype text inside the page with the original fonts preserved and the paragraph reflowing in place; insert and edit images in the content stream. Forms, outlines, stamps, signatures and page operations included. No cover-up boxes, no export detour, no second licence.

// 04

An approved Indian AI stack

Indian-origin models and open weights on Indian GPU infrastructure — Sarvam AI, Krutrim, CoRover BharatGPT, AI4Bharat, Bhashini, or your own weights on Yotta Shakti Cloud or E2E Networks. Nothing leaves Indian territory, so nothing has to be switched off.

// the_apps

Six apps, one engine layer, one AI panel

Every app is a real editor first — it opens and saves the files your department already holds — and every app embeds the same document-aware agent.

  • 01

    Docs

    .docx editing where only the paragraphs you touched are rewritten — tracked changes, comments, equations.

  • 02

    Sheets

    .xlsx with an in-house Rust engine: pivot tables, slicers, charts, formula tracing.

  • 03

    Slides

    .pptx on our own engine: masters, layouts, smart guides, non-destructive crop.

  • 04

    PDF

    Real text and image editing inside the page — forms, signatures, page operations.

  • 05

    Markdown

    A block editor over plain .md files, saved back as plain Markdown.

  • 06

    Shell

    The tabbed host: home screen, recent files, light/dark/system, signed auto-update.

  • 07

    Document agent

    Reads the open file and edits it block by block, with diffs and snapshots.

  • 08

    Agent tools

    Search, image generation, media analysis and transcription, on the approved stack.

What runs here, and what stops being bought

Left: the guarantees that let a Tier A department switch the AI on. Right: the line items and workarounds it retires the same day.

Runs on an approved Indian stack

Every one of these is a property of the build, not a setting an operator can forget.

  • 01All inference inside Indian territory — no prompt, no document, no citizen record leaves the country.
  • 02Model choice is yours — Sarvam AI, Krutrim, BharatGPT, or your own open weights on Indian GPUs.
  • 03Indic OCR and output across all 22 scheduled Indian languages, from Indic-specialised models rather than a Western general-purpose fallback.
  • 04AI-generated output carries C2PA provenance and SGI labelling per the IT Amendment Rules, 2026.
  • 05No user ever enters a model API key — the department holds the credential.
  • 06Every prompt and response logged with actor and purpose, PII-masked, retained in India.
  • 07Saves to ODF for editable records and PDF/A for archival, per the Open Standards policy.
  • 08Runs over MSWAN-class links and on the desktops already sitting in the office.

What a department stops paying for

Each line is a live cost or a daily workaround today — and none of them survives the rollout.

  • 01The AI half of a full-price seat that has never once been switched on.
  • 02A second licence for a PDF editor, because the suite can only annotate.
  • 03Circulars scanned to flat images that no one can search, quote or reflow.
  • 04The export-to-PDF-then-fix-it round trip every time a layout has to hold.
  • 05A translation vendor for the official-language edition of a document already drafted.
  • 06An analyst booked for a budget model that is four pivot tables and a chart.
  • 07Sending a working file outside the department because there is no safe place to ask.

Residency, provenance labelling and the audit trail are properties of the build. Model, hosting region and retention are fixed per deployment, in writing. VAPT, STQC certification and the manual accessibility audit stay procedural and per department — no product delivers those on its own.

What makes it work

01

The AI is actually switched on

Every generative feature runs on an approved Indian stack — Indian-origin models and open weights on Indian GPU infrastructure. Nothing leaves Indian territory, so nothing has to be disabled.

02

Real PDF editing, not annotation

Retype text inside the page with the original fonts preserved, replace images in the content stream, fill forms, reorder pages and sign. No cover-up boxes, no re-export, no third-party tool.

03

Advanced spreadsheets, by description

Ask for a model and get one: formulas, pivot tables, slicers, conditional formatting and charts built and traced for you — then the analysis written up beside it in plain language.

04

Documents Word never notices

Byte-preserving .docx round trip — only the paragraphs you touched are regenerated, everything else is kept byte for byte, so a file opened and saved here still lays out correctly in Word.

05

Open formats by default

ODF for editable documents and PDF/A for archival, which is what the Open Standards policy for e-governance requires — with tagged, accessible PDF output rather than a flat scan.

06

Runs on the desktop you have

Windows, Linux and macOS, installed per machine. It works over MSWAN-class connectivity and does not assume a fast public-internet link to a foreign region.

Foways Office FAQ

Why can't we use the AI features in the office suite we already pay for?
Because the inference for those features runs in data centres outside India, and citizen data cannot leave Indian territory under the DPDP regime or a Tier A department's own security policy. The licence is valid; the feature is unreachable. Departments therefore pay the AI-era seat price and work with a pre-AI product.
What AI models does Foways Office run on?
Indian-origin models and Indian-hosted open weights — Sarvam AI, Krutrim, CoRover BharatGPT, AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2 and Bhashini/ULCA — or open weights you host yourself on Yotta Shakti Cloud, E2E Networks, Neysa, Tata, Sify or NxtGen. The choice is fixed per deployment and written into the contract. No model API key is ever entered by a user.
Can Foways Office really edit a PDF, or does it just annotate?
It edits the page itself. Text is retyped in the content stream with the original fonts preserved and the paragraph reflowing in place, and images are inserted or replaced in the stream — nothing is layered on top. Forms, outlines, stamps, signatures and page operations are all included, so the separate PDF editor licence stops being necessary.
Does it open the .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files we already have?
It opens and saves them natively, and hands back unchanged everything you did not edit. A save rewrites only the paragraphs, cells or shapes you touched; every other byte of the original file is copied through, so pagination and layout survive the round trip. It also writes ODF for editable records and PDF/A for archival, as the Open Standards policy requires.
How does it handle India's 22 scheduled languages?
Across all 22 languages of the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution, plus English, through Indic-specialised models — AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2 for translation, Bhashini for language services, and Indic OCR across the scripts they are written in: Devanagari, Bengali–Assamese, Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Perso-Arabic, Meitei Mayek and Ol Chiki. Quality on these is materially better than on general-purpose Western models, particularly for conjuncts and scanned circulars. Statutory text still goes to a human reviewer before publication.
Is AI-generated content labelled the way the 2026 rules require?
Every AI-generated image, audio or video asset carries C2PA provenance metadata and a visible synthetic-content label, per the IT (Intermediary Guidelines) Amendment Rules, 2026. Labels are embedded at generation rather than applied afterwards, so they survive export. The prompt and response pair behind each one is logged with actor and purpose, PII-masked, and retained in India.
